Summer Reading List 




Carroll High School



All 9th grade students are required to read book 1 and Pre-AP students are required to read book 1 and book 2. These books can be found online or purchased. These assignments are due on the first day of school. Each student will present his or her project to the in class. The projects will be worth 2 test grades and then we will take a Lexile test on each book and this will count 3 test grades. YOU DO NOT WANT TO START THE YEAR WITH 5 ZEROS! BOOK 1- 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey

You will choose one habit and complete 1 of the following projects for the habit:

·         A PowerPoint or Prezi presentation covering the information in the chapter 

o    Contain lesson objectives

o    Graphic/Picture on EVERY slide (including title slide)

o    MAX 6 – 8 words per bullet point

o    Must include ALL important information from that chapter



·         A cartoon based on your habit using or you may create one on your own.

o    It must show several characters discussing the importance of adopting your habit

o    It must have at contain at least 3 strips

o    Print it out


·         An Animoto PhotoMovie

o    Photomovie must have at least 15 slides

o    Must include important information from the chapter

o    Must include images AND text that explains the key components of you habit


·         A poster (bigger than an 8.5x11 piece of printer paper) that gives a visual representation of your “habit”

o    Use a poster board or Post It sheet (bigger than an 8.5”x11” piece of printer paper)

o    Should be a visual representation of your habit

o    Must be able to be read from anywhere in the class

o    Hand-drawn pictures and pictures from the internet and magazines okay



Book 2 PRE-AP ONLY! You may choose one of the following:

The Miracle Worker, William Gibson

My Antonia, Willa Cather

Tears of a Tiger, Sharon Draper

Tuesdays with Morrie, Mitch Albom

**Some of these books may contain mature language and content. Parents, please assist your child in selecting a book that you find appropriate.

Project  (*All components must be included.)

1. Decorate the front of a brown grocery bag:

·         a scene from the novel

·         the title of the novel

·         the author's name

·         your name

2. Decorate the back of the bag:

·         the names of the main characters

·         the names of the supporting characters

·         information about the setting

·         summary of the plot

3. Inside the bag:

·         five (5) objects that help tell the story

·          two (2) objects that symbolize something in the story (example, a Valentine’s Day card that represents Miss Love Simpson teaching Will and Rucker about love)

·         three (3) objects that remind you of the main characters
